At the start of the World War 2 numerous tunnels were excavated for the following reasons:

  • The entire 16,000 strong Garrison could be housed with enough food/water to last them for 16 months
  • To store huge amounts of food, equipment and ammunition
  • Also housed were underground telephone exchange, power generating station, water distillation plant, a hospital, a bakery, ammunition magazines and a vehicle maintenance workshop
